The Problem list on the Prep tab compares the athena problem list with Matic's suggestions. A quick pass before the visit keeps the chart clean, and it drives the codes Matic suggests later.
Tip: It usually takes about 30 seconds. Many providers do it just before walking into the room.
Read the problem list
The left column is the Athena problem list before this visit.
The right column is Matic's Suggested problem list. Where the chart has duplicate diagnoses, Matic suggests merging them into one.
Click any problem to see the evidence behind it: its criteria, such as the labs, vitals and medications that support it, and its history.
Decide each suggestion
Every tile has up to three buttons. Hover any of them and Matic spells out exactly what that click does to this problem; here is what they say.
+ Today's note, and the chart when it is new
New problem Matic found: “Add [problem] to the Athena problem list and to today's note.”
Problem already on the athena list: “Add [problem] to today's note. It stays on the Athena problem list and is filed on this encounter.”
Merge of duplicates: “Merge [the duplicates] into [problem] on the Athena problem list and add it to today's note.”
More specific code: “Update the Athena problem list to [problem] and add it to today's note.”
Use + for the problems you plan to discuss. They go into today's note and athena's Assessment & Plan for the encounter, so you can enter orders before you walk in.
− The chart only, not today's note
Problem already on the list: “Keep [problem] on the Athena problem list; not in today's note by default. Matic may still add it if it comes up in the visit or is needed for the note.”
New problem, merge or code update: the same, with “Add”, “Merge” or “Update” in place of “Keep”: the chart changes, today's note does not.
Payer-file diagnoses (suggested by a risk partner such as Agilon) have no −: “Payer-file diagnoses must be documented in today's note to be billed.” Decide each one with + or ×.
A tile you mark − reads Kept on the problem list · not in today's note by default. If the problem comes up in the room, Matic adds it to the note anyway.
× Dismiss the suggestion, or take the problem off the chart
New problem Matic found: “Dismiss this suggestion. [problem] is not added to Athena or to today's note.”
Merge of duplicates: “Dismiss this merge. The chart problems stay as they are.”
More specific code: “Dismiss this code update. The chart keeps its current code.”
Problem Matic suggests removing (resolved, or contradicted by the chart): “Remove [problem] from the Athena problem list.” Here + or − keeps it instead.
Problems that are already on the athena list and that Matic is not suggesting you change show only + and −; their tile reads Stays on the problem list until you decide.

Decide everything at once
The bar at the bottom of the card shows how many suggestions are still undecided. For those, choose:
+ Do as Matic suggests · chart + note does every remaining suggestion as Matic suggests, in the chart and today's note: new diagnoses, merges and code updates go onto the athena problem list and into today's note, removals are applied, unchanged problems stay on the list, and suggestions Matic recommends dismissing are dismissed. Payer-file diagnoses stay undecided; decide each one.
− Do as Matic suggests · chart only does the same on the chart but adds nothing to today's note. You confirm with Yes, chart only. Matic may still add a problem to the note if it comes up in the visit or is needed for the note.
Leave as is to make no changes.
When Matic has written your decisions to athena, each tile shows Applied to the Athena chart.
Troubleshooting
"Athena problem list not received yet"
The chart hasn't arrived from athena, or the review hasn't been built yet (No problem-list review for this visit yet.). Wait, or click Retry Prep.
"Couldn't save these decisions — the visit's encounter is still syncing from Athena."
Try again in a minute.
"…approving could remove problems we never saw"
Matic didn't get the full list from athena. Open the Chart menu, choose Regenerate brief, then reconcile again.
A tile says the chart update failed
Click Retry chart updates on that tile.
"No Athena encounter for this visit yet"
You can still decide now. Your decisions apply as soon as the visit is started in athenaNet.
FAQs
I checked a problem. Why isn't it in today's note?
Only problems marked + go into today's note. − keeps them on the athena list only (unless they come up in the visit). Change the tile to +, then generate or regenerate the note.
I pressed + and then changed my mind. Why is it still in athena?
Your decisions are written to athena at check-in. Once a problem is in the encounter's Assessment & Plan, switching the tile to − stops it from being discussed in the note, but Matic never deletes anything already written in athena. Remove it in athena if you want it gone.
Can I remove a problem that Matic didn't suggest removing?
Not from Matic yet. Matic is deliberately conservative about taking problems off the list, so old problems it keeps (a 2015 sinusitis, say) have to be removed in athena for now. A manual option is on our list.
What do the three buttons at the bottom do?
Hover over each one for a full description. In short: chart + note accepts every remaining suggestion in athena and today's note; chart only updates the athena list but adds nothing to the note; Leave as is changes nothing. If the hover text leaves you unsure, tell Mat through Support; that is exactly what it is there for.
Do I have to reconcile before recording?
No. You can also work through the list during the visit. Doing it first means the problems you plan to discuss are already in place.
